Joining in the celebration of mythical Merfolk this month of MerMay, I’ve added a new piece to my growing collection of mermaid illustrations!
Meet Mergen and Angoulė…
This is the first merman I’ve sketched, and I’m fairly pleased with how he has turned out, though there will be some changes made when/if I create a colored version.
Someday I shall write a post on the merfolk of the planet Aiala in The Sun Kingdom, but for now, let’s bring Mergen home to his wife and eldest daughter:
Lidar and Adva were two of last year’s mermaids, and we’ve now solved the mystery of what Mergen was concerned with: here, the whale-type creatures are the deadly ones. The only way to protect a wandering-prone infant is to let them play the part of a shark - most creatures know better than to attack a shark-child, because the parent is never far behind. If you wondered why Mergen doesn’t look too happy, Angoulė is a little too curious and mischievous for her size!
(I only just realized that this backstory ties into the original inspiration for Lidar and Adva, if you read the original post.)
Thankfully, Lidar is unaware of the issue, as Anguolė was out for a swim with her father while Adva stayed home.
You can read a little more about mother and daughter here:
Last but not least, here is Naia, another 2024 mermaiden.
Naia is one of the few colored images I have which isn’t used as a cover artwork, breaker, or logo. I particularly like the metallic sheen of her tail, and all of the blues and teals here. If you want to read a bit more in the original post, you can find it here:
Star-Spun is fully supported by its audience. Instead of buying me a coffee, you can purchase my novels or leave a donation which will go towards the purchase of fabric for interactive projects, where you’ll be able to vote on what historical dress or film costume I’ll recreate! Donations also help to continue creating Star-Spun’s content and to support the local Latin Mass.

These are beautiful! Thank you for sharing them.
That wife and daughter one is joyous.
And I love the colored one. So moody.
