Normally I don’t write microfiction or horror; but, I wrote this out after a vivid nightmare. I’ve been trying out new genres, and the change of pace is fun, even if it happens to be a nightmare on its own. Let me know what you think!
Every night, I see it. The glimpse and gleam of white, saltwater-stained ribs, flashing in moonlight against a bloody black sea.
First I think it’s the Nautilus.
Then I remember.
You can hear it coming, feel it, see the tail slowly flash, the cage slipping over you as the water laps.
There’s nowhere to run.
Not from it.
It was the phosphorus-eyed warden of the sea—
The Deathwake.
Larger than a whale, ribs laced tightly together, kept alive by who knows what—
And it swallowed divers, merfolk, and the shipwrecked, dragging them along through the depths of the sea.
One night, it swallowed me.
I think it could be a whole story of its own, but for now, I might use this creature within The Sword of Myn’.
Have you ever had vivid nightmares that you were able to use as inspiration?
Windflower is fully supported by its audience. Instead of buying me a coffee, you can purchase my novels or leave a donation which will go towards the purchase of fabric for interactive projects, where you’ll be able to vote on what historical dress or film costume I’ll recreate! Donations also help to continue creating Windflower’s content and to support the local Latin Mass.

Gives a sense of dread. Well executed.
Glad to hear you're planning to use the creature in another story.
Creepy, and interesting.
No I haven't used a nightmare for a story, but I did start writing something based off a dream, which, if i may say so myself, was a great beginning for a book.
